IMAP is pleased to announce that DegroofPetercam – IMAP France acted as financial advisor to the Mestdagh family in the context of the sale of SA Mestdagh to Les Mousquetaires group (Intermarché banner).
With 87 supermarkets, more than 135,000sqm of sales area and a turnover of €694 million in 2021, SA Mestdagh is a major player in food distribution in Belgium. The Mestdagh Group was founded in 1900 and for more than 120 years the family has developed the business into a flagship food retailer in Belgium. Faced with increased competition and consolidation, the Mestdagh family wanted to explore different options.
Intermarché is a banner of Les Mousquetaires Group. In Belgium, Intermarché currently operates 78 shops and over 90,000sqm of sales area and displayed a turnover of 780 million euros in 2021. Founded in 1969, Les Mousquetaires Group is a major player in the European retail and food industry with a turnover (including fuel) of over €50 billion in 2021. The Group operates banners such as Intermarché, Netto, Bricomarché, Bricorama, Bricocash, Roady and Rapid Pare-Brise in France, Portugal, Poland and Belgium.
This emblematic and strategic transaction in the Belgian food retail sector will enable Intermarché Belgium to double its number of stores and its market share in a highly concentrated market that offers few opportunities for development of this type. The new entity will have a stronger territorial coverage and will offer consumers the combined strength of both groups. The Mestdagh family, attached to the values and quality standards it shares with Intermarché, guarantees a future of sustainable growth to Mestdagh stores, thanks to an ambitious and long-term project.
