STRABAG, a European construction technology group generating annual output of approximately €20 billion, has signed an agreement to acquire 100% of BAWI Construction, a Bucharest-based specialist in railway infrastructure construction and modernisation. Closing is expected in the second half of 2026, subject to regulatory approvals.

Headquartered in Bucharest, BAWI is an established provider across the full railway infrastructure value chain, offering construction and modernisation services, specialised works, and in-house component production. The company employs approximately 240 people and generated output of around €60 million in 2025. Its skilled workforce and specialised machinery fleet support a high degree of vertical integration and technical self-sufficiency.

The acquisition strengthens STRABAG's position in the Romanian and broader Southeast European railway market, one of the region's most active infrastructure investment environments, driven by significant EU funding programmes. BAWI will be integrated into STRABAG's South + East segment, complementing the group's existing Romanian operations, which have been active in the country since 1991.
